First Lady Michelle Obama’s education initiative, Reach Higher, encourages students to plan their future by completing education past high school. This initiative focuses on four areas under President Obama’s North Star Goal of having the country achieve the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.
Reach Higher focus areas include:
- Exposing students to college and career opportunities.
- Understanding financial aid eligibility that can make college affordability a reality.
- Encouraging academic planning and summer learning opportunities.
- Supporting high school counselors who can help more students get into college.
Washington state is joining the movement and working to expand opportunities for students past high school. WCAN offers a way to help networks align college access and completion work to larger statewide priorities. Partnership with WCAN and alignment with the Reach Higher initiative provide a larger platform and elevates local network programming and support efforts to a national level.
